How many attempts are included?
Same day, next day, and standard service each include four attempts at the address you provide. A rural outlying address includes three attempts. An extra-rural address includes two. If those attempts are used and the person is not served, you receive a declaration of due diligence. The attempt count is the work included in the price, not a promise that the person will be there.
Same day service is $195 and the first attempt is the same day the order starts. Next day service is $175 and the first attempt is the next day. Standard service is $150 and the first attempt is within one to three days. An order placed after the office closes at 5pm PST, Monday through Friday, is processed the next business day, and the first-attempt clock starts then. Call 619-399-3278 if you are unsure which clock applies to the address.
Four attempts on a covered address
Same day process serving uses the same four-attempt budget as next day and standard. The difference is when the first try goes out, not how many tries are included. Attempts are made at the address on the order. A different address is a separate serve at the full price, not a free fifth try. An extra person at that same address is $40, and only on these three in-person services.
A specific time window is a $30 add-on. It asks for an attempt inside the window you name. It does not add attempts, and it does not mean someone will wait past that window. If the job needs waiting at the location, add a stakeout instead. A stakeout is $80 per hour with a two-hour minimum. The minimum is billed even if the person is found sooner, and there is no promise the person will be there.
Rural and extra-rural attempt counts
Outlying towns carry a $45 surcharge and three attempts rather than four. Those towns include Jamul, Alpine, Ramona, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Valley Center, and Bonsall. Chula Vista, Oceanside, and North County cities such as Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista, San Marcos, and Encinitas stay on the standard four-attempt price. Temecula and Murrieta are standard coverage as well, with four attempts. Both are in Riverside County, so the proof of service comes back to you to file. The rural surcharge is not added on top of those cities.
Extra-rural back-country addresses are $100 and include two attempts. Call the office before you order one of those. The order form can apply the rural surcharge from the address, but an extra-rural job should be confirmed by phone first so the attempt count and the price are clear before you pay. Do not assume a remote address still includes four tries.
What is not part of the attempt count
Email service is $60 and, during office hours, goes out the same day. It is one email to the address you provide. It is not an in-person attempt budget and it does not include four doorstep tries. First-class mail is $60 and certified mail is $75. Both leave the same day when the order is in by 12pm PST. When it misses that cutoff, we may mail them the next business day. A mailing is not four attempts.
Incarceration service covers a person in custody. The first attempt is within one to three days, and the job includes four attempts. It is not on the order form. Military base service is a $65 add-on to an in-person serve. Base approval has to be arranged before anyone goes on the base, and that add-on is refunded if approval cannot be arranged. The underlying serve still has its own attempt count.
When the attempts are finished
When the included attempts are used and the person is not served, the paperwork you receive is a declaration of due diligence. It describes what was tried. It is not a proof of service. The declaration of due diligence guide explains that document. If you later want papers left with another adult or posted at the address, read personal, substituted, and posted service first, and put any instruction you already have on the order. Rockstar will not tell you which method a court will accept.
You can ask for another round by placing a new order, or you can ask for a skip trace if you need a different address. Neither one is included after the attempts run out. Questions about a job already underway can go through the FAQ or the contact form. New work starts on the order form. Call 619-399-3278 Monday through Friday, 7am–5pm PST, when the address is extra-rural.
Service attempts are also made outside of these office hours.
